There is so much that goes into having long-lasting, healthy piercings. Taking care of them can make all the difference.

What to Clean with

Sterile Saline

Sterile Saline cont.

I recommend any sterile saline spray meant for piercings. I keep some in stock or Walmart, Walgreens, or even Dollar Stores have “Wound Wash”. If ordering online, see the LINKS page for links on Amazon of aftercare that I would recommend.

This does not mean use a nasal spray or contact solution. I have been asked, and it is a no! They have other ingredients that are not good for wounds!

I also do not love DIY salt washes.

Is the cup sterile? Is the water sterile? The salt? How much salt is good for your PH? Do you know?

The Sterile Saline is the simplest option and easy for on-the-go use.

Use half water and half alcohol-free Listerine anytime you eat, drink anything that isn’t water, or smoke.

Short-term Aftercare

Don't Touch!

Do not sleep on it!

Don’t touch! cont.

Only touch your fresh piercing with clean, freshly washed hands. You should only be touching them when cleaning them until a minimum of 30 days have passed.

Twisting is bad, mkay?!

Don’t use scented soaps, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. These can kill “good germs”.
Don’t use ointments, balms, creams, or oils that can trap bacteria.

Wait, Wait you said no twisting?

Sleeping on a piercing can cause irritation and migration. While you can resolve irritation, there is no fix for migration. Only removal and re-piercing once healed.

After 10 days, reduce to 1-2 times a day

Wait, Wait you said no twisting?

That’s right! I know a lot of us grew up with that but it is outdated information.

All you’re doing is introducing bacteria and breaking up healing.

Clean it 2-3 times a day for 10 days

Using a sterile saline spray, hold the jewelry still and clean the piercing. You may use your fingers or a cotton swab. Do not rotate the jewelry unless cleaning. I recommend Recovery Saline Spray (here or online) or Wound Wash, found at local stores.

Clean again after showering

Keep them out of bodies of water and UV rays

Keep them out of bodies of water and UV rays

When taking a shower, do not let the water hit the fresh piercing area directly. Instead, use clean runoff water. You will need to clean the area separately after a shower to make sure no residue from your shampoo, conditioner, or soap is left.

No submerging in unclean water such as pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs, bathtubs, etc. for 30 days.

No direct sun or tanning bed light either!

Minor Bleeding is Normal

No makeup near the area while scabbing is present!

No makeup near the area while scabbing is present!

Some bleeding is normal when cleaning during the first week. When you clean, you can break up the scabbing which removes the clot. Just be gentle and keep it clean. Just don’t over-clean!

You are more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases during healing.

Also, yeast is present in alcohols like wine and beer but liquor, like tequila, is okay. You do NOT want an infection and makeup harbors bacteria. Keep the makeup away from any fresh piercings.

After 30 days you are able to change jewelry

Are your customers raving about you on social media? Share their great stories to help turn potential customers into loyal ones. Make sure to keep the top of the jewelry tight so that it does not fall out. Assume that anytime the jewelry is not in the skin your piercing could close up.

Be Patient. Most piercings heal in about 8 weeks but others take 6 months to a year.
Be healthy.

Stay hydrated, eat nutritiously, and practice good hygiene.

Smoking will slow down your healing vs a non-smoker.

Sebum?

WHEN CLEANING, CHECK JEWELRY

WHEN CLEANING, CHECK JEWELRY

Sebum is a thick yellowish/white substance with an unpleasant odor commonly found in healed piercing channels. It is a normal bodily secretion and should not be cause for concern. Healed piercings should be cleaned daily to prevent build-up that could cause infection.

These piercings are known to cause gum erosion and damage to enamel on the teeth. Do not clack or rub the jewelry across the teeth and avoid biting the jewelry. It is advised to go to your regular dental checkups to stay on top of any possible damage from these activities.
