There is so much to that goes into great body art and it starts and ends with you. Taking care of your skin can make all the difference.
If bandaged: Remove 1-2 hours after receiving your tattoo & do not rebandage! (It is a wound, so it needs to breathe!)
If you have SecondSkin, Saniderm, or another medical-grade, breathable, water-resistant tattoo bandage; Leave your bandage on for a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of 4 days. You will likely see some dark liquid coming from your tattoo over this time. This is excess plasma draining from your skin and is completely natural! This excretion helps to heal your tattoo with less scabbing. Ensure that your bandage remains sealed. If the seal has been broken then remove the bandage right away. Removal instructions below:
Wash hands. Under gentle, running water or in the shower (at a comfortable temperature), carefully peel the corners of the bandage. Be patient and do not rip the bandage off! This can cause further irritation and can damage your tattoo!
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW tot continue care or if you are not wearing Saniderm.
Only touch your fresh work with clean, freshly washed hands. You should only be touching when cleaning until any scabbing is completely gone.
Take Ibuprofen as directed to reduce swelling and pain
At least when you wake and before bed you should wash your body art with a gentle antibacterial soap. Dr. Bronners Baby Unscented is great and is my preference but liquid dial gold will do. Pat dry with clean paper towel or air dry.
We recommend an unscented lotion in a pinch or Hustle Butter or Mad Rabbit's healing Gel if you want to order ahead of time. After cleaning and drying the area. Apply a very small amount with clean freshly washed hands. Just enough to moisturize the area. You can use this until healed. It is good for all tattooing.
When taking a shower, do not let the water hit the fresh procedure area directly. Instead use clean run off water. You will need to clean the area separately after a shower to make sure no residue from your shampoo, conditioner, or soap is left.
No submerging in unclean water such as pools, lakes, ocean, hot tub, bathtubs, etc. for 30 days.
No direct sun or tanning bed light either!
No rigorous activities that could expose your tattoo to sweaty, dirty environments!
Do not pick or pull at scabs.
Picking and pulling them will result is patchy work and can also cause scarring.
Do not apply alcohol, Vaseline, numbing agents, A&D ointment, or other ointments to your healing tattoo. (Soap & lotion only!)
It is recommended to throw out your old tube and use a new one. Mascara harbors bacteria.
Right after the procedure, the procedure area will start to oxidize and darken. It will continue to be dark until the scabbing has worked its way off. This is totally normal.
Once the scabbing has worked its way off you have fresh new skin over the color that lies underneath. This new skin will be lighter at first as it gets saturated with the pigment underneath. Again, this is totally normal.
for some, especially very fine line artworks, It is normal to have a little unevenness in color as far as being darker or lighter is concerned. Just let me know and I will get you in for a touch-up.
To keep your artowrk looking great long-term, be sure to protect it with your preferred SPF anytime you expose it to UV rays.
Don't allow any chemical peel products to touch your tattooed area.
Anything that targets anti-aging, pigmentation, acne, or contains glycolic or fruity acids will play havoc with ink longevity. Avoid applying at-home skin care products to your tattooed area.
At the first sign of infection (fever, swelling, or redness that lasts over 4 days after your tattoo OR drainage from scabs), contact your tattoo artist or physician.
